Grade 11-12 Life Drawing (AVI3M, 3O, AVI4M)

It's a funny sort of assignment when I have to ask students to loosen up and stop trying so hard.  Learning to draw in a loose, expressive way can be difficult, especially for students who prefer a much more controlled way of working.  Here are some examples of life drawing exercises that we completed together. 

Warming Up- Grade 10 (AVI2O)

The weather is cooling off (a bit) but the talent of our students is just starting to warm up.  Sometimes it's hard to get into the groove of art when you've had months away from school, but everybody is really eager and excited to get back to work.

Here are some grade 10 "handscapes", a quick assignment to help the students refresh their skills.  At the bottom you can see what steps they are taking to learn how to use conte as well.  It's going to be a great year- stay tuned!

Beautiful Work!

I was contacted at the end of the semester to see if any of my students would like to take on a private commission to paint a baby's room.  With all of the talent in my class it was hard to recommend somebody specifically, but these two artistic sisters, Heather and Kelly, took on the challenge and created a really lovely piece that I'm sure will be enjoyed for years to come.  Way to go girls!

Last Day!

Today is the last day of school until September.  I've ordered A LOT of books to go over, as I want to try to really change my program for the new semester.  I usually add a project or two per year, but after 5+ years of similar assignments, I'm ready for some real changes.  Stay tuned :) 
The last assignment I will leave you with is a creative photography assignment.  My background is photography, but the work that I exhibit is what I would call "photographic sculpture".  For this assignment, the students were asked to tell an open ended photographic story based on their portfolio theme.  In addition, they were asked to find a creative way to manipulate their photos as well- either digitally through Photoshop, or manually through the display and presentation (this could include things such as photographic sculptures).  I was really happy with many of the results, and I think that next year I will probably dedicate more time to this type of assignment.
