Here are a new batch of grade 9-10 soap stone animals!  The students did a great job on these, showing a lot of time and dedication.  I really enjoyed the variety of colours we got out of this batch of stones.  Of course, they look better in person, but you get the idea.  Click on them to see the gorgeous details!  (They are on average the size of an outstretched hand).

I had a conundrum one night.  I had painted a quick watercolour of my favourite island in Brazil (Florianopolis), but I hated the way the rocks turned out.  I had to figure out a way to fix and disguise them... so I decided to soak some rice paper in glue and create textures.  I liked the way it turned out and decided to try this technique with my students at school.  In addition, I masked out

These drawings were inspired by the work at Allen Smutylo's exhibit Wild Places Wild Hearts: Nomads of the Himalaya. The students found photographs of people from another culture that they liked, then found a pattern or piece of textile from that culture to create a background with.  Their final pieces were BIG and have not all photographed well- but you'll get the idea.  I have a few more to add

The grade 10 students were asked to take a photograph and cut it up into four pieces to create a new composition.  Then, they used this design as the basis for their conte drawing.   *One more needs to be uploaded, it's being perfected :)

I LOVED how this assignment turned out!  I liked the idea of using magnetic poetry in order to inspire a piece of art- I also liked the literacy connection.  The grade 11 students were asked to go to magneticpoetry.com and create any sentence or phrase.  When they had completed and taken a screen shot of their words, they were asked to create a monoprint that would work with their phrase.  They

After doing some research on Google, I was inspired by organic sculpture, especially flower based pieces.  I decided to turn this interest into a project for my students, and they loved it.  The grade 11 students were asked to take a basic organic form and elaborate it, using repeating shapes and textures.  We had some difficulties with explosions in the kiln, so not every project is shown here.

Some of my favourite assignments to mark are the senior student's sketchbooks.  Each week they are asked to experiment with new materials for one hour and reflect on why or how they created their sketch.  I've recieved really innovative pieces- made of makeup, cardboard, 3D paper, nail polish, spray paint... here are some of my favourites.

These pieces are created on scratch-board, therefore the students have to remove the highlights (white areas) in order to create an image- sort of the opposite of drawing with pencil.  They did these pieces completely  freehand- keep in mind that you can't fix mistakes with these boards!  These are some of the most detailed from the group.

For this assignment, students were asked to take the lyrics from their favourite band and combine a snippet of the text with their own photography.  The final product was to tell a story that the viewer could dwell on, avoiding a direct link with the original words.  What I love about art assignments is that even with the same instructions, every students produces something completely unique!

The AVI1O/AVI2O class worked incredibly hard on their stipple animal pictures, more than any other class I've had.  The first two pictures you see took up to fifteen hours of dotting to complete.  A few are also incomplete, but I decided to post them anyway to give you an idea of what they can look like at different stages.  Overall, these drawings show amazing possibilities with humble dots.

For this assignment, the grade 9-10 students carved pieces of linoleum and turned them into stamps to make prints. The students learned how to compose an image by creating a collage and then selecting what they felt was the most interesting section of their collage- this is a great way to come up with a scene when you're in a creative rut.

For this sculpture assignment students in Grade 9 and 10 created plaster masks of their faces. After studying the elements of African masks, they were asked to build upon their masks by showing an area of emphasis, use a variety of materials, and show areas of pattern. Stipple (or pointillism) is a technique where drawings are shaded with hundreds or even thousands of little dots. This year, our students were asked to create a picture of a vehicle using this technique. It's amazing what kind of three-dimensionality we can achieve with just a bunch of dots! The second assignment the grade 12 class was given was to create a reinterpretation of a piece of art. For example, there have been many interpretations of the biblical figure David from the story of David and Goliath. Students met the challenge by choosing an artist they like from art history and then changing backgrounds, colours, props, etc. Can you recognize who they were inspired by?

This was an observation drawing that our grade 12 students completed at the beginning of the semester. I enjoy seeing so many interpretations of the same skeleton.

These paintings definately impressed all of the parents who came to parent-teacher interviews last week. The students chose an image of their choice, manipulated it using photoshop, and painted their results on a large canvas. You make us all very proud! Miss GP.S. I also caught the high contrast bug, and painted the yellow car in this set of pictures.

For this semester's assignment, the grade 9-10 class was asked to find a picture that demonstrates Depth of Field- a term used in photography to describe a picture with a focused foreground and a blurry background. They were to use this picture as inspiration for their own painting.This was a challenging assignment. Students had to create their own colours, learn how to blend them together

I don't often centre one piece of work out in particular, but this drawing by grade 10 student Rebecca really impressed everybody who saw it! The attention to fine detail and the range of tones (created entirely with small dots) is really outstanding.

The grade 9/10 students of 2009 have produced a beautiful set of tonal drawings. The grade 9s were asked to do faces, and the grade 10s (who have taken the course before) chose a picture of their choice to do. The pictures look even better in real life. I think it's easy to say, HOW GREAT THOU ART!

Our newest grade 10 students were asked to create contour drawings of their hands, using expressive gestures. Then, they created a dynamic background and pasted the hands on top... this assignment was left very open to the students imagination, and I'm sure you'll agree that they have a great amount of creativity!

For this assignment, students were asked to come up with a design that incorporated a contemporary background with a more traditional subject in the foreground. These drawings not only solve the given problem, but also invite the viewer to keep looking at what is going on.

Another part of the final grade 12 grade is based on a presentation of their portfolios. 10% of the final mark for grade 12 students is based on their sketchbook- the ideas and research they present, and the quality and experimentation 0f their drawings. Although there was a bit of procrastination by some, the overall results were expressive and critically thought out.

A generous member of the community dropped off three large bags of dried gourds for us to use. The student's assignment was to create a design that incorporated a Canadian aboriginal object/animal and a pattern, creating a three-dimensional object, rather than a two-dimensional surface. The results were truly unique and generated discussion from other classes and visitors.
